Kassandra Rodriguez Professor Goner Abuse in the workplace Abuse in the workplace is behavior that causes the workers any emotional or physical harm. Discrimination, sexual harassment/harassment, violence and bullying are forms of workplace abuse. These actions are not always detectable from each other because they often overlap. Harassment could be discriminatory, bullying could be a form of harassment, and any of these behaviors can lead to violence in the workplace. There are many questions that could be asked about this like, Do men often report sexual harassment? Do minorities report Discrimination? Do men or women really experience violence in the workplace? Violence in the workplace as an threat or act of physical harm toward another person at the work site. the abusers might use verbal abuse or physically assault their victims to intimidate them. A person who threatens a coworker with physical harm is usually considered a ââ¬Ëtypicalââ¬â¢ bully. However, the boss or supervisor who often requests an employee to do work or threa tens to fire them also is a bully. Bullies sometimes pretend to ignore their coworkers to make them feel invisible. Bullies also use other tactics to humiliate their victims, such as rumors to spread lies about them or try to sabotage their work. Discriminatory behavior treats workers very unfair usually on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or age. Discrimination is prohibited by federal and state laws. Unfair actions incorporate retaliation, harassment, denying employment and making decisions that affect people in these categories. Bullying, violence and discrimination often are categorized as workplace harassment. Therefore, harassment victims suffer the sa... ...t down and come up with some statistics and go over our data. Now, participant observation is a little different, The main objective of participant observation is to grasp a deep understanding and become familiar with a certain group of individuals. So where would we conduct this? in an office where there are more than 5 people being ran by 1 boss. How long? anywhere from 6 months to a year. We would keep close eye on how the boss/supervisor interacts with their employees. The main goal is to try and see how the working population is treated behind closed doors. Maybe, this study can help change the way people are treated for working hard. Change the way it is handled, make it more serious when someone files a complaint against a worker for sexual harassment or bullying. Would you want your kids to be treated in this manner? so lets try and stop it head on.

Life, Death, and the Heroic Archetype Essay -- Heroes Hero Essays
Life, Death, and the Heroic Archetype The heroic archetype is a creative expression borne of the individual's desire to know and to understand the uncontrollable and often chaotic world in which he lives. In the popular culture of America we can find many reflections of the heroic figure; in writing, in the graphic art of comic books, and most certainly in the aftermath of September 11th, heroes are ever present. Our cultural champions speak to our collective need to make sense of the nonsensical and to establish order in both our external and internal worlds. Indeed it is through the internal world of the psyche and the lens of psychological thought that we may gain a better perspective of the fusion of creativity and knowledge that we have come to call the heroic figure. Creative experience and its expression cannot exist without some contextual framework by which it is understood and appreciated. The very survival of all that is creative depends upon such knowledge. Just as a bird released from its cage must eventually return to roost or perish in the wilderness so must our creative thoughts and imaginings eventually return to the reality of the corporeal world and the causal laws that govern it. This is the very nature of that which we call 'learning' and it is in such a way that creative thought gains relevance and weight, becoming part of our conscious reality. It is through this relationship between creativity and knowledge, between that which we imagine and that which we know, that we may gain a greater understanding of the heroic figure and its cultural significance. The archetype of the hero is an expression of our imagination as well as a reflection of our experience. Carl Jung develops this idea in his essa... ...ranz, M-L. "Science and the Unconscious." Physician assisted euthanasia
Quality of life is not often guaranteed when one is suffering from a terminal illness. In fact quality of life and terminal illnesses hardly seem to be complementary. For years debate has been ongoing on the morality and legality of physician administered active voluntary euthanasia also known as physician assisted suicide or PAS for short. Physician assisted suicide involves a physician, at the request of the patient, either withholding or administering some form of procedure that would immediately or eventually lead to ending the patientââ¬â¢s life. Such an act becomes necessary when the quality of life for the patient is laced with pain and suffering, when alternatives do not seem to work and therefore the patient opts for death rather than a life in their current condition. The most furtive debate is often not whether physician assisted euthanasia is ethical in all cases but whether or not the state should legalize this practice (Kamisar 1123; Kaveny 125). Numerous arguments ha ve been put forward on the two sides of the argument and both seem feasible. However, whatever the opposing positions, the arguments for the legalization of physician assisted euthanasia are quite valid. Euthanasia should be legalized throughout the states of the U.S.A. as an option for patients, in consultation with their families and physicians.Reporting on data from a questionnaire among physicians Gupta, Bhatnagar and Mishra highlighted that 60% supported the legalization of physician assisted euthanasia at least in some cases. One argument for its legalization relates to an individualââ¬â¢s right to choose what is in his best interest. One of the fundamental principles that prevails in the U. S. is the right of the individual to determine and charter his own life path (Gittelman 372). The government aims to be as unobtrusive as possible when it comes to involvement in the affairs of the individual. Therefore the government should not restrict an individualââ¬â¢s choice of death over life in situations where the former seems to be the better alternative. The patient, therefore, as ultimate decision maker should be empowered to make such a decision independently.Opponents of legalization would want to suggest here that if the individual is given such all-encompassing power then this will suggest further societal implications. As in the case with abortion, the line between acts that affect just the individual and those that impact wider society will become distorted. On the other hand it is the duty of the government to draft correct procedures that would properly guide the practice of euthanasia. It will not be left up to the individual at all times to arbitrary decide when to die by accessing euthanasia but detailed and specific guidelines must be laid down in conjunction with the legislative instrument. As Gittelman argues, government must aim to control the actions of individuals in so far as they are overall harmful to self and other members in th e society (372).Related to this argument is a further benefit of physician assisted euthanasia. Currently physicians are conducting euthanasia even though it is illegal in most states across the U.S. (Gupta, Bhatnagar and Mishra). Physicians who comply with the requests of patients are taking a legal risk. There is the implication that this practice is not uniformed as there are no standards by which euthanasia is being conducted on this non-legal basis. Furthermore very little is known of the extent to which euthanasia is practiced throughout the United States (Kamisar 1124). The benefit that legalization would bring is to make the procedures more standardized and administrators would have significantly more control over its processes.Opponents have been pointing to the case of Judith Curren as grounds on which legalization should not be explored. Curren was an obese woman of 42 suffering from chronic-fatigue syndrome who was assisted to death by Dr. Kevorkian. Obviously her situat ion was not chronic enough to merit euthanasia (Kaveny 125) and other options could have been explored. It is, however, precisely because of these cases why physician assisted euthanasia should be legalized. Incompetence would be avoided and dealt with appropriately if necessary.A further argument for the legalization of euthanasia is the financial strain it would remove from families who have to maintain care of terminally ill relatives. The medical costs incurred by individual families and the government when such hospitalization is covered through it social services, are tremendous. Medical costs for terminally ill patients would therefore be significantly less because some would have the option of terminating life early rather than depend on a life support system that is not curative. Moreover more doctors would, as suggested by Gittelman, be willing to explore the possibility of euthanasia with patients (372).Another reason for legalization is to protect doctors from unnecessar y lawsuits and criminal penalties for acts done at the request of the patient. Doctors are now putting themselves at serious risks by carrying out euthanasia on their patients. Without the legislative backing physicians who persist with euthanasia go against the dictates of the law. Legalization, detailing the specific conditions and circumstances under which euthanasia could be performed, would avoid abuse by physicians ensuring that the proper procedures are followed. Therefore terminally ill patients would be protected in two main regards, they will be protected from the wrongful judgment of physicians to make poor decisions on their behalf and on the other hand patients would be protected from ceaseless pain and suffering. Many more arguments could be leveled in favor of the legalization of physician assisted euthanasia. What is evident is that the arguments that have been used to counter legalization are not quite sound. The rare case where this practice was misused by unprofess ional personnel is not a true reflection of its true potential. Furthermore lack of proper governmental regulation is what is contributing to these problems. Legalization would therefore dispel these problems.REFERENCESGittelman, David. ââ¬Å"Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide.â⬠Southern Medical Journal 92.4 (April 1999): 369-374.Gupta, Deepak, Sushma Bhatnagar and Seema Mishra. ââ¬Å"Euthanasia: Issues Implied Within.â⬠Internet Journal of Pain, Symptom Control & Palliative Care 4.1(2006):1.Kamisar, Yale. ââ¬Å"Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Problems Presented by the Compelling Heartwrenching case.â⬠The Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology 88.3 (1998): 1121-1146.Kaveny, M. How Do We Cultivate Interest in Reading Essay
How often have we heard other people saying that they have no time for reading? This is a mere excuse. In actual words, they are implying that they have lost the urge to educate themselves by keeping abreast with the current trends of thought like science and technology. This trend can be seen in many young people today and not only do they come up with excuses that they have no time for reading, quite a handful of them have absolutely no interest in reading. One must know that education does not end upon leaving school or university. Knowledge is infinite and to acquire knowledge is a never-ending process. What can be done to cultivate young peopleââ¬â¢s interest in reading? Firstly, parents can play their part in encouraging their children to read by setting an example. As most of the young people today are easily influenced by their environment, they will be influenced by their parentsââ¬â¢ interest in reading and will pick up reading, helping nurture their interest in reading as a result. Parents can also bring their children to browse in the library or bookstore and allow them to browse on their own and select the books which genres are to their preference. By giving them the opportunity to choose their own books, they will be able to discover their area of interest in the different types of genres and will be keen to read more of the books of the specific genres they are interested in. This will enable them to develop an interest in reading. Secondly, schools can play their part in cultivating their studentsââ¬â¢ interest in reading by inviting a famous author to share her experiences of reading and writing to the students. Through sharing her experiences of reading and writing to the students, they will be more motivated to read and find out more about the authorââ¬â¢s books. This will help them discover the joy and fun of reading and thus enabling them to develop an interest in reading. Schools should also organize special activities for the students to promote a reading culture. For example, the students can be asked to read any book of their choice and then a day should be decided where they will discuss about the books they have read recently. This will not only grow reading interest among the young generation but also help them to improve their vocabulary and language. Lastly, the young people should be responsible in cultivating their interest in reading. If they have no idea on the specific books that they want to read or a specific genre that they are interested in, they should ask their friends or teachers for recommendations or consult a list of books other young people have enjoyed reading and try reading them. They should also make an effort to read during their leisure time and pick up reading as a hobby. This will not only enable them to develop an interest in reading but acquire valuable knowledge from the books they read. Reading links us from the past to the present. Different facets of our personality are linked together by books. Books serve as both milestones and sign-posts in our journey through life. They are the wardrobes of our thoughts and imagination, the talisman against boredom, pain, tragedies and frustration which assail us. In reading books, we are able to share the authorââ¬â¢s secrets and thoughts, his joy and happiness, his sorrow and distress. We form a bond of friendship more lasting than any other human relationship. Therefore, it is important that young people develop an interest in reading as reading is the greatest of all educators.

Capital Gains and Losses Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Capital Gains and Losses - Research Paper Example Other than inventory items, companies may end up in selling other assets. If the ââ¬Ëotherââ¬â¢ assets generate gains or losses, they are referred to as capital gains or capital losses (Hammer, 2013). A capital gain is, therefore, the profit realized by an investor from selling an asset at a higher price than he bought it.1 Companies may also decide to exchange assets in the absence of tax-free exchange rules. In such an exchange, capital gains or losses may be incurred. Capital gains receive a more favorable treatment compared to other types of income. According to Weltman (2011), tax law is more favorable on all incomes categorized as capital gains. Tax law also provides a special treatment for capital losses. Capital gains and losses are realized from capital assets. All property except inventory accounts receivable from the sale of inventory, depreciable property such as telephones, U.S. government publications, and real property used in the business are treated as capital assets. Most properties that one owns and uses for personal purposes or investments are considered to be capital assets. Examples of capital assets include cars, furniture, stocks, bonds, and houses. During the transfer of assets, if the amount received for the asset exceeds the adjusted basis of the property, a gain is recorded. If the amount received from the buyer is less than the adjusted basis of the property, a loss is recorded (Weltman, 2011). In order for the company to record either a capital gain or a capital loss, an exchange must occur. Though it may take hundreds of pages to define the tax code and limit what may be accounted for as capital gain or loss, the basic idea is simple. A capital gain is the increase in value of a capital asset. Cordes, Ebel & Gravelle (2007) define capital gains as the changes in value of capital assets such as real estate, business interest, or corporate stock. Gains and losses can either be

Creativity - Assignment Example Feeling self feels, takes a lot, is emotional, repressive, and supportive, likes to teach and is sensitive of others. Experimental self- imagines, is curious, likes surprises, speculates, and is impetuous takes risks (Korkmaz, 2014). Intelligence does not necessarily reflect in good thinking. This is true because an increase in the intelligence level can only lead to a better life, health, and the standard of living. Intelligence forms part of the good approach to life. Good or deep thinking in life it is not adequate to just react to events, and situations. It is correct that intelligence does not result in good thinking. Parading shift can involve change of the basic assumptions by aligning them in a way from one action to another. Parading shift can be so helpful for instance both in faith and businesses. For example in business or in the market place one can learn how deal with money by saving, keeping records for one self in order to refer in future and you canââ¬â¢t exclude budgeting. In faith you can gain spiritual activation, enlightenment, and healing. Parading shift is necessary for one to utilize. 4. Brainstorm and then describe a home environment that would foster creativity in people of all ages. Do two versions one where money is not a limiting factor, and do an analysis of the result: which version had the more creative ideas? Did have the constraints restrict or encourage your creative thinking. People usually become creative when the money is the secondary motivator to them. Money leads one or can motivate a person to discover incredible products, design great arts and even invent revolutionary firms in their environment. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter the age bracket of a person but money drives him/her to venture in it. When people have a good base for money that sets them comfortable, they use the monetary rewards to make them do the creative jobs perfectly. When there are no rewards that can demotivate a person

The Impact of Strategic International Job Placement Term Paper
The Impact of Strategic International Job Placement - Term Paper Example The companies hired for these functions are well equipped with trained personnel and tolls to perform the jobs more efficiently and cost effectively. Typically, an outsourcing process includes four different stages. The first stage includes the strategic thought processing for building up the philosophy for outsourcing activities. The second stage involves the evaluation of the outsourcing projects and selecting the suitable one. The third stage deals with the development of the contract and the determination of the price of SLA (service level agreement). Finally, the fourth stage deals with the relationship management between the client and the service provider. Business Process Outsourcing and Information Technology Outsourcing are the most common forms of outsourcing. The task of outsourcing becomes more delicate when the work is offshored i.e. the work is done in a different country. This brings in certain differences of culture and time zone. In USA, business processes are outsourced at a huge rate. Since 1980s the outsourcing by US started gaining momentum. The range of outsourcing is also wide since USA outsources material inputs outside the firm and also hires services from beyond the borders through FDI in foreign countries. The process of outsourcing thus has multifaceted implication on USA. It has influenced USA's trade, labor market, welfare, growth and industrial structure. Out of all the impacts of outsourcing, the impact on the US labor market happens to be the most sought after issue. Effect of Outsourcing on GDPThe prime reason for outsourcing in US is the cost and time savings. These benefits of outsourcing offer immense growth potential for the US firms. The outsourcing of functions in USA has had a significant effect on the country's GDP. It is estimated that outsourcing added $33.6 billion to the real GDP of USA in 2003. The analysis in 2003 estimated that by 2008 outsourcing will add $ 124.2 billion to the real GDP of USA. The trade effects of outsourcing were seen to be positive. In 2003, US exports were higher by $2.3 billion because of outsourcing and the estimated value of exports from outsourcing in 2008 was $9 billion. Extensive research on outsourcing revealed some magical figures on savings. It was seen that the IT industry in USA will save up to $ 390 billion through software development and offshore services. The GDP of USA also grew considerably through massive rounds of outsourcing. Between 1999 and 2002 USA experienced an additional growth of $2 30 billion in their GDP. Some of the remarkable figures in US export and import indicate that the significant improvement is due to outsourcing. In 2004, the export figure on services was $343.9 billion in services while the import was $296.1 billion. US trade in services increased by 33 % from $482.3 billion (1999) to $640 billion (2004), with exports rising by 22 percent and imports increasing by 48 percent (Greene W. January 2006). Outsourcing of Manufacturing and IT jobs The benefit of IT outsourcing is enhanced productivity. II capital prices are significantly low and tend to fall. Hence, a company which is focusing on the outsourcing IT will have two options open before it; purchase IT capital
